"Speak English"

[edit]

Just for the record, it was Gilles Bisson who was heckled by Spina to speak English rather than French in the legislature. I believe whoever wrote that it was Rosario Marchese had the matter confused with a different incident the same year, which involved two other Tory MPPs heckling Marchese by deliberately mispronouncing his surname. I was actually thinking of something else entirely., butI can't find a reliable source for it now. Such is life. CJCurrie 22:54, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmm. I'm not sure what that would be. For what it's worth, though, here's a media reference for my comment above: Tory MPPs marked the International Day for the Elimination of Racism with typical flair. First John O'Toole, the Borg from Durham East, got a laugh by crying out to former NDP cabinet minister Rosario Marchese, "Oh, Marcheezie." Marchese corrected the pronunciation (mar-kay-zay) and complained that the cheesy joke upset him. O'Toole replied, "Good!" Then colleague Peter Preston, the Borg from Brant Haldimand, shouted, "Why don't you call yourself Smith! No problem!" But the finest moment in Tory sensitivity came on the 10th anniversary of Ontario's French Language Services Act. As MPP Gilles Bisson spoke in French to mark the occasion, razor-witted Joe Spina yelled, "Speak English!" [1] Bearcat 07:24, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I noticed the "Eye Lashes" report too. The incident I referenced was different but, again, I can't find a reliable source and it's probably not important enough to research. CJCurrie 07:35, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
